Ever had one of those phases where you just don’t know what you want to do with your life? Well, we can totally help with that! Ella Brobbey was in the exact same position (she still is, in fact) and has found that applying for a range of opportunities through GoThinkBig gives her a better insight into different industries so she can decide what she wants to do.
The Psychology and Drama student joined GoThinkBig in January after it was recommended to her by a friend and since then she’s undertaken three opportunities!
“The first place I applied to was O2. I was shadowing the Head of Commercial Strategy so I got to sit in on some meetings and see what the work environment and HQ in Slough are like,” Ella explains. “The second one I went to was PR agency Blue Rubicon for a week. I got to work with people who were working on Instagram and help people do research for their new clients, including the This Girl Can campaign.”
Her third placement was with us at GTB HQ, the highlight of which was meeting Alesha Dixon!
Each placement was different to the next which is what Ella wanted: “I was going for anything that I thought was quite interesting. I’m very open-minded, I’ve just left uni so I don’t want to limit myself to something, I want to see what’s out there and experience everything,” she says. “Doing these experiences has proven to me that I’m very professional when I’m on placement, it’s taught me what it’s going to be like when I start working properly and it’s given me an insight into what work life is,” she adds.
If you didn’t already know, there’s loads of tips on how to apply to opportunities on our site but Ella gave us another top tip that’s already secured her three placements.
“I know there’s a set way to try and make yourself stand out and be professional but with me I like to put my personality into it because that’s also another way to make yourself stand out. The first thing I wrote in my standout was ‘#thestruggleisreal’; at the time I thought I might as well go for it, it’s something different, I’m assuming it’s not something they see everyday,” she says. It’s definitely not!
Ella also advises reading the features on GoThinkBig, especially this one. You’ve got the advice, now all you need to do is choose your opportunity and go for it! “Choose whatever you think would be interesting. Alesha Dixon said something that I thought was quite interesting; there’s no need to fear, if you just put yourself out there you never know what may come from it. Which is really true because I thought when I first applied to O2 I wouldn’t get anything out of it but it’s given me the confidence to keep on applying and experiencing things I wouldn’t normally experience,” she says.
As for now, Ella is going to continue applying for placements to see what else is out there, although her time at Blue Rubicon has definitely sparked an interest in PR.
